Historical series Itaú Unibanco expands Pix by Approximation to 100% of clients
A pioneer in the development of the solution, the new payment method was already available on all Itaú’s Point of Sale (POS) machines and has gradually been implemented for individual clients.
February 2025 – Itaú Unibanco announces the expansion of Pix (the Central Bank of Brazil’s instant payment system) to 100% of its individual clients. The feature, which allows payments via proximity technology (near-field communication, or NFC), without the need to open Itaú Superapp, was made available to all clients ahead of the mandatory schedule set by the Central Bank.
As a leading player in building the solution, Itaú announced Pix by Approximation in 2024 and, since November, clients of the bank and other financial institutions have been able to make payments with the Pix NFC on all POS machines – Itaú’s instant payment systems, operated by Rede. This journey was implemented gradually and is now being extended to 100% of individual clients.
With this functionality, clients can make payments quickly, conveniently and securely, by simply bringing their cell phone close to the machine and without the need for a QR Code or opening the bank’s app to make the transaction. For commercial establishments, the innovation brings greater practicality and convenience, reducing transaction times and, consequently, improving the shopping experience for consumers, in addition to enabling real-time payment.
